It is the estate's top wine, or rather, it is the wine that has made the estate famous all over the world. The wine takes its name from a place on the grounds of "Il Terriccio", where the wolves (in Italian: lupi), which used to exist in the area, came out of hiding before attacking their prey. In Tuscan dialect, this is called the "balzello", that is, the point where the wolf, coming out of the bushes, could be killed even before it could attack its prey. The "luogo della caccia al lupo" (place of hunting the wolf) then became Lupicaia.
