2014 Syrah

In California, the winemaker is granted certain gifts: the fruit will always ripen, it will never suffer from a lack of depth of character, of power. It is not in my nature to lean away from these gifts, or to try to deny them by harvesting too early or over-picking the vineyard. I choose instead to lean in to meet the fruit where it is. The goal with Syrah, as with all Lillian wines, is to work with these historic, noble varietals in a sun-drenched place, but to work with the fruit in a way that gives the wines lightness and oomph. A certain transparency and delicacy in the detail. The Syrah is not particularly Syrah-like in the result. It doesn't scream out the usual cocktail of blackberries, bacon fat and lavender. It always feels a bit more like the people and the places than the varietal. The wines are lush, but there's a refined, stony quality to them that defies description.
