The first Bin 2 was released as early as 1960, but was then put on hold by Penfolds in the 1970s to make room for the more popular pure Shiraz and whites. Originally, the Bin 2 should form a counterpart to the great Burgundies from France Mataro, known in France as Mouvedre, was very rare in Australia. Yet the grape variety came downunder as early as the 1830s and found its new home in the Barossa Valley. For us, this wine from Penfolds is an absolute insider tip, his other "Bin" colleagues are now traded at the highest prices, while the Bin 2 still flies somewhat under the radar. Let's see how long it will stay that way!
