Tawny ports differ from the ruby-red Ruby ports in that they are aged from the beginning in smaller wooden barrels in an oxidative process, i.e. with a little more oxygen contact, and thus lose their depth of color (hence the name tawny). They are usually somewhat softer, rounder, more restrained in the depth of fruit than the Rubys, with their scent of apricots and often brioche or fresh bread more reminiscent of a matured red sweet wine. Due to the maturity in wood, the high alcohol and usually also sugar content, they can be kept longer when opened, up to a month, in contrast to the Rubys, which should be drunk within a few days. A special feature is the 10 Years Old Tawny, whose youngest wines (it is always a blend of different vintages) have spent at least 10 years in wood.
