This is a cerebral and emotionally stirring wine that takes us back to a very different, more innocent time in the rapidly evolving timeline of this powerful wine appellation in southern Tuscany. The 1983 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a brilliant but naked wine that reminds us of the original blueprint of Brunello, a wine made from a particular Sangiovese clone chosen for its long aging potential. Despite the long aging in bottle, this wine shows an amazing purity and clarity of fruit. The palate is polished and bright, with tannins that have softened with time. A bright moment of acidic freshness reminds us that this wine is still very much alive.
