Delicate herbal tones compete with violets and currants. The tongue is immersed in the dense juice of blackberries and cherries. The palate rejoices in velvet and silk. A Blaufränkisch that captivates with its cool character, which is focused and clear in the mouth. Thanks to its fresh acid vein, this is a decidedly fast-paced wine. It goes down really quickly and crisply with a beef roulade or Blunzengröstl. A wine for every day.

Grape variety: Blaufränkisch

Bottler, importer: Ernst Bernhard und Mitges, Neubaugasse 21, 7301 Deutschkreutz, Austria

Serious. An adjective that has always accompanied Bernhard Ernst since his start in 2005. Making serious wines was already his goal back then. However, the whole process was more improvised, an experiment in his parents' garage, young and wild, just as he was.

To this day, nothing has changed in terms of producing serious wines. However, the framework conditions have. A tasteful new winery and a wife who is now "dreaming his dream" have been added. Structure, order and a touch of feminine elegance were introduced. Sylvia Ernst, a woman from Vorarlberg, decided to move from the west to the east of Austria and devote her heart and soul to this new task. Together, the two are now living this winemaker's dream with one goal: to reflect their homeland in the best possible way in their wines. "Origin counts" is both their motto and their message. The winemaker couple's flagship wines - three single-vineyard Blaufränkisch wines (Fabian, Goldberg and Hochberg) - as well as the Zion and La Mission cuvées - clearly reveal this very origin - Deutschkreutz in central Burgenland.

In the eastern part of Austria, on the border with the Hungarian Plain, lies Burgenland, which is the second largest wine-growing region in the country with a vineyard area of 14,560 hectares. The region is divided into five wine-growing areas, some of which have been given new names: Eisenberg (formerly Südburgenland), Mittelburgenland, Leithaberg (formerly Neusiedlersee-Hügelland), Neusiedlersee and Rosalia, which was only added in 2016 and was created from the Mattersburg (Leithaberg) Großlage. The natural conditions are ideal for viticulture: the hot summer climate is balanced out by the humidity of Lake Neusiedl and numerous wooded areas, enabling the growth of white grape varieties such as Grüner VeltlinerWelschriesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc as well as red varieties such as Blaufränkisch and Blauen Zweigelt. In autumn, the humidity in the "Seewinkel" favors the development of botrytis on the grapes, from which the Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wines are produced, which are among the best sweet wines in Europe today and which have made the Neusiedlersee growing region (8,000 hectares of vineyards) famous.
