NV Cabernet Sauvignon No.02

The True Vineyard is located on a bench a few hundred feet below the summit of Howell Mountain. It was planted by Frank Dotzler in the late 1990s. The site is nine acres in size and was literally carved out of the volcanic bedrock. It has a very different feel to the endless rows of vines that cover the valley floor and lower slopes. The oaks and pyres of hollowed-out rock that surround the site convey a sense of intimacy. The site and the wines that emerge from it are incredibly specific. As the grape harvest approaches, you can almost see the otherworldly purple aromas seeping out of the rock and between the ripening grapes. When the wines are young, they taste chiseled. The lush black fruit, violets and rich tannins are made evident by the rock. But our wine is not that kind of wine. This wine has returned to the surrounding forest. Its long 19th century-style elevage has taken all the edges off the wine. Violets have become roses that drift freely among the leaves.
